Obama and Panetta having a very public hissy fit at each other

In the days following the successful raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound that killed the terrorist leader, CIA Director Leon Panetta made the TV news channel rounds. He told the talking heads and their audiences that the administration had graphic, gruesome photographs of bin Laden’s corpse and that he was fairly certain the imagery would be released to prove he’d been killed.

"I just think it's important, they know we have it, to release it," Panetta said.

Nope, said President Obama in an interview with CBS News’ 60 Minutes. The man who couldn’t roll a bowling ball down the frickin Interstate or throw a baseball in the Pacific Ocean used a sports analogy in punking the Chief Spook. “We don’t trot this stuff out as trophies,” he said. “We don’t need to spike the football.”

Oh, dear.

image Panetta doesn’t seem to be taking this sitting down, though. Perhaps you remember this famous photograph, purporting to show Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Hilary Clinton and Pentagon Brass watching a supposedly live video feed of the raid itself.

Yesterday, in an interview with PBS, Panetta told the network that there was no live video feed of the raid, after all.

“Once those teams went into the compound I can tell you that there was a time period of almost 20 or 25 minutes where we really didn’t know just exactly what was going on. And there were some very tense moments as we were waiting for information.

“We had some observation of the approach there, but we did not have direct flow of information as to the actual conduct of the operation itself as they were going through the compound.” What, exactly, were Obama & Company watching in the photo above?

The more important question though is this: Why is Leon Panetta intentionally trying to embarrass the President of the United States?

The public disagreement over the release of photographs of the dead terrorist isn’t the first. In fact, Panetta has also copped to believing that “enhanced interrogation techniques” (that’s waterboarding) led intelligence services to information they used to locate bin Laden’s compound. If Senator Obama had gotten his way, President Obama would never have gotten the information he used to collect his trophy kill.

Extra Point: Still want that Pentagon post, Mr. CIA Director?

Obama’s praise of Eagles’ “second chance” causes left meltdown

image This is one of those rare opportunities to write about a mashup of football and politics. In today’s Los Angeles Times, the paper’s Brian Bennett and Michael Memoli report on a phone conversation between Barack Obama and Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeff Lurie.

El Presidente’s main objective was to give some props to Lurie for greening up Lincoln Financial Field with wind turbines, solar panels and other equally cost ineffective means of powering the stadium (yes, Virginia…  Green Energy costs jobs). But the conversation also touched on Lurie’s controversial decision to give Michael Vick a “second chance” by signing him to a one-year deal after Vick was released from prison.

Vick, as we all know, confessed to operating a dogfighting ring in August 2007 and served 19 months of a two-year sentence in federal prison. Vick was once the highest paid player in the NFL but was suspended by the league after his allocution. He was reinstated prior to the season and Lurie gave him a shot, sparking an intense firestorm from the left’s animal rights wacko groups like PETA.

Vick has had an outstanding season and prior to last night’s upset by the Vikings, Vick appeared headed for a league MVP title. Obama reportedly praised Lurie for taking a shot with the controversial quarterback, and instantly reopened the old can of worms.

"This is a nation of football lovers," said Lisa Lange, a spokeswoman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. She also said Obama was underestimating the negative reaction his comments would provoke. "It is also a nation of dog lovers."While discussing Lurie's November announcement to add hundreds of wind turbines and solar panels to Lincoln Financial Field, Obama also commended him for giving Vick a second chance, according to Peter King of NBC and Sports Illustrated.

…

A White House statement Tuesday cast Obama's comments as consistent with the president's view that "individuals who have paid for their crimes should have an opportunity to contribute to society again."

…

But Bill Smith, the founder of Main Line Animal Rescue in the Philadelphia area, bristled at Obama's characterization that the Eagles' signing of Vick was motivated by wanting to give a convicted felon a second chance.

"If he couldn't throw a football, he wouldn't have had a second chance," said Smith, who organized a campaign last season to collect food for animal shelters every time Vick was sacked on the field. "This isn't about giving anyone a second chance; it's about who can make the Eagles organization more money."

…

[Vick] riled activists this month when he told NBC News that he "would love to get another dog in the future. I think it would be a big step for me in the rehabilitation process."

Vick is not allowed to own a dog while he is on probation, and PETA wants the restriction extended when he is up for review in 2012. In the same way convicted pedophiles are not allowed to be alone with children, PETA's board says, it believes convicted animal abusers should be denied unsupervised access to pets.

The left is all about giving their favored folks—like child rapist Roman Polanski and domestic terrorist Bill Ayers—second chances. But when a favored target like Michael Vick is given a second chance, all hell breaks loose.

Roman Polanski has never even faced justice for seducing an intoxicated tweener, and Bill Ayers tried to kill people. Michael Vick confessed to his crimes, served his sentence and was released from prison on probation. His probation has included volunteering for the Humane Society, where he has spent more than a year speaking to children about the evils of animal abuse.  Tony Dungy, one of the finest men in the NFL world has testified to Vick’s successful rehabilitation.

Vick has paid the price for his misdeeds and has earned the chance to play again. He’s made the best of that chance and by all accounts, has turned his life around. Meanwhile, lefty criminals like Polanski and Ayers are unapologetic and treated like persecuted rock stars.

Net Neutrality and DISCLOSE Act: A two-pronged attack on sites like this one

image In today’s Wall Street Journal is report on the FCC’s move to impose stricter regulation on the Internet. A similar attempt by the agency in 2005 was thrown out last April by a federal court. Unbowed and defiant, the FCC is taking another bite at the apple. At stake is the eventual regulation of internet service as a telecom or public utility. Ed Morrissey at Hotair.com calls the current compromise proposal a “bullet dodged.” But I’m not so sure.

I have known no government effort to regulate or control something stop at the first step.  That crucial first step is always one on a slippery slope. As the WSJ piece notes, it’s a matter of concern for service providers and small startups alike, and it has liberals huffing that it doesn’t go far enough:

Net neutrality has become a contentious issue as worries grow that large phone and cable companies are growing too powerful as Internet gatekeepers. Start-ups and small businesses that rely on the Internet to provide shopping, information or other services to consumers are particularly concerned.

The FCC has wanted to step in and act as an Internet traffic cop, but Congress has never given it clear authority to do so.

"We must take action to protect consumers against price hikes and closed access to the Internet—and our proposed framework is designed to do just that: to guard against these risks while recognizing the legitimate needs and interests of broadband providers," FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said in a blog post this month.

Liberal activists and some consumer advocates have sharply criticized the proposal, saying it allows too much leeway to big broadband providers and falls well short of promises made by President Barack Obama, including limits on how the rules apply to mobile broadband networks.

The proposal will certainly be challenged in court, using the same arguments that led to a successful block earlier this year. And the new Congress—elected in large part by a majority expressing anger at the ever-growing reach of the federal government—is just as likely as not to gut the FCC’s budget for enforcement. A battle looms that will play out through the 2012 elections.

Meanwhile, the left is eager to pursue the Orwellian DISCLOSE Act, which was narrowly defeated in the US Senate just before the November bloodbath that swept Republicans into power in the House.  Thank GOD:

In the past week, Senate Democrats considered a bare-bones strategy for the measure that would involve stripping the bill down to just the disclosure requirements, effectively setting up a vote for or against transparency.

With time running out before Senate heads out of town, however, leaders have decided to begin debate with the bill they voted on before the August recess. That vote attracted 58 votes in the Senate, two shy of the 60 needed to overcome a filibuster.

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) was absent the day of the vote and has told watchdogs he will vote in favor of the bill, so supporters need to flip just one of Maine’s senators to break the filibuster.

The measure would have forced sites like this one to file full disclosure on all sources of revenue if they engaged in the ordinary exercise of First Amendment rights. If this blog were to carry a series of opinion pieces opposing or supporting a particular candidate for office or a ballot measure, I would have to eventually either shut down the site or spend countless hours and money filing Federal Election Commission reports, even if not one cent of revenue came from political campaigns, PAC’s or party organizations.

Meanwhile, big labor unions and other traditionally leftist groups would be exempted from the legislation’s requirements by the loopholes carved out by lobbyists and opponents of free speech.  It exempts non-profits with 500,000 or more members. Special provisions were included to keep the National Rifle Association on the sidelines.  It is an onerous and blatant attempt to squelch speech that favors individual liberties, smaller government, lower taxes and a better business climate.

Speech that readers saw here daily in the run-up to the November elections.

Give the government the opportunity to control who accesses the Internet, and the government will certainly limit the access of its critics. Give the government the opportunity to control not only the access to free speech but the content of the expression itself, and it is certain to do so.

Net Neutrality and the DISCLOSE Act are nothing more than a two pronged attack on conservative voices, and they absolutely must be stopped.

BREAKING: US Senate votes to BLOCK Obama’s planned tax hike

The measure now goes to the House of Representatives.

Notice that I didn’t use the words "Bush” or “Tax Cut” in the title?  Appropriate isn’t it, considering that an extension of existing tax law is not, by definition, a cut in taxes.  Nor was Bush responsible for the legislation that created the existing tax law.  Only the Congress can cut or raise taxes and had the Congress failed to act, then it would have imposed the largest tax increase in the history of the Republic.

That is all.

Obama, Citizen of the World praises the veterans of “this great country”

Obama stood before a crowd and praised the veterans who fought and died for the independence of “this great country.”

"This great country” was Indonesia though. The United States? Meh. Not so much.

image Obama honored our veterans from afar by laying a wreath during a ceremony at an Army base in South Korea last night.

That is a distance from here matched only by the chasm that has opened up between him and the voters who elected him two years ago.

This aloofness of his really is becoming a problem.

Not that Obama doesn't appreciate the sacrifices of veterans. He absolutely does. Just ask the Indonesians.

He was in Jakarta for their Heroes Day this week to honor their veterans "who have sacrificed on behalf of this great country."

"This great country," of course, being Indonesia.

"When my stepfather was a boy, he watched his own father and older brother leave home to fight and die in the struggle for Indonesian independence," Obama told the audience.

And the White House wonders why so many people think there is something foreign about this guy.

Charles Hurt of the NY Post notes Obama’s aloofness. To this writer, it’s not the aloofness that sticks in America’s collective craw. It’s the outright disdain for everything that is America combined with a willingness to embrace those who would seek to destroy us.

Yesterday, Obama visited the colossal Istiqlal Mosque and gave a speech on “tolerance.” This, ironically, is the same location that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited four years ago, was welcomed as a “rock star,” and proceeded to incite the crowd to “FIGHT AMERICA! FIGHT ISRAEL!”

Obama quietly lays a wreath at an Army base halfway around the world. He gives a speech praising Indonesian veterans, and gives another speech on tolerance at the same location that the President of one of our most dangerous enemies encouraged the same crowd to help destroy us.

The White House shouldn’t worry too much about the “something foreign” with this guy. What they should be worried about is why he seemingly aligns himself with people who spit in America’s eye.

Presidential Hypocrisy

I’m  sure the right-channel blogosphere will light up with similar comments today, but El Presidente’s weekly radio address has me steaming. The gall, the hypocrisy of this man is absolutely incredible.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama on Saturday chided the two top Republicans in Congress, challenging his rivals to make a fresh start and build a bipartisan effort to boost growth after next week's election.

Speaking three days before a midterm congressional election in which his Democrats are expected to suffer heavy losses, Obama said lawmakers had a "duty" to seek common ground.

"That's why I found the recent comments by the top two Republicans in Congress so troubling," Obama said in his weekly radio address, in which he urged Democrats and Republicans to work together on issues like extending middle-class tax cuts.

"The Republican leader of the House actually said that 'this is not the time for compromise.' And the Republican leader of the Senate said his main goal after this election is simply to win the next one," Obama said, referring to Representative John Boehner and Senator Mitch McConnell.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the same man who told Hispanic voters that they needed to go to the polls and “punish our enemies.” When was the last time the President of the United States of America labeled his own citizens “enemies?”  This is also the same man who, using that tired and idiotic car-in-the-ditch metaphor, told supporters that Republicans could go along for the recovery ride, but that we had to “sit in the back.”

And now, three days before the electorate will hand him and his liberal, left-wing radical Democrat Party a first class ass kicking, he has the gall to tell us what our duty is?  Merriam-Webster defines a “hypocrite” as one who “acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings.”  In other words, someone who says one thing but does another is practicing hypocrisy.

This is hypocrisy taken to a whole new level.  For the last two years, this man and his minions in Congress have refused every opportunity to work with Republicans.  On Stimulus.  On Healthcare. On Financial Regulation.  On the takeover of the automobile industry. On extending the Bush tax cuts.  And he says it’s our duty to work with him?

Not no, President Hypocrite.  Not no, but HELL NO. There will be no compromise of principles. No quarter, whatsoever. If you want to work with the new Congress, it’s you who must do your duty, asshole.

About that car… in the ditch… and the slurpee… PICS!

You know that car in the ditch that El Presidente has been talking so much about?

Found it.

ObamaCarDitch

We found Obama, too.  Guess where he was?  At Tacky Jack’s.  Sipping on a Slurpee, or something.

image

Later on, he and his hug buddy Charlie Crist went to the beach.  Wow.  Boobs on the beach.

image

Obama didn’t make it to this beach, though.

image

Oh well.  At least Michelle didn’t get stuck in the ditch.  She had reservations in a modest secluded, getaway on the coast of Spain.

Obama’s 12-day, post-election vacation. How will Democrats take it? (Updated)

Scroll down for the update, please.

Commenter Julie Weathers poses an interesting question in response to the Gallup plus Five Thirty Eight post.

She writes:

I'm curious as to how America will react to the thought of the Obama 12-day vacation after the election. Will the idea of them booking every room, restaurant and banquet facility in the Taj raise the ire against irresponsible spending? That number doesn't include the other 215 rooms booked in other luxury hotels in Mumbai. I noticed the Taj is completely booked all week, not just the two days O will be there so I assume the taxpayers are picking up that tab also.

It's unfortunate for some democrats I think really don't deserve to be voted out as they had tried to be a voice of reason. I think the party is going to take a tremendous hit for the arrogance of the WH.

That’s a great question and an interesting dilemma for Democrats, especially the fiscally and socially conservative Democrats who are most at risk in this election.  Safe Democrats (if there is such an animal in this election cycle) won’t be affected by controversy surrounding El Presidente’s trip.  They’re entrenched elitists and for many of them, this is how they want to spend their vacations when they grow up.

But for Democrats in purplish states and Congressional Districts, this kind of stuff is what makes conservative Democrats turn Republican.  Imagine your party being handed a historic electoral defeat, despite your rank and file having laid their political careers on the line to support the party standard bearer’s legislative agenda.

Instead of helping the party pick up some pieces and figure out the way forward, the standard bearer goes on a two-week, lavish vacation to the eastern hemisphere, costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands—if not millions—of dollars.  Do reasonable Democrats shrug it off, or do they see it as an iconic display of Obama’s arrogance and aloofness?

The weeks following the election will be interesting.

BTW, if you aren’t following Julie on Twitter, shame on ya. The lady is a gifted writer and a keen political observer.

10/25/10 UPDATE: Here’s a story that hit Fox News this morning. Fox News is either reading this blog, or is following Julie on Twitter.

Timing is everything, indeed:

Just days after the Democratic Party is expected to suffer some level of defeat in the midterm elections, President Obama will leave Washington and head overseas. The White House has scheduled one of the longest trips of the presidency so far, with a 10-day multi-country tour that commences just two days after votes have been cast.

The trip, which has been planned for quite some time, includes a stop in Japan at the end of the itinerary for the annual Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting which is scheduled for November 13 -14th.

But it's the departure date that some have said shows the president rushing off after the November 2nd elections.

One conservative critic called it the "Elvis has left the building" technique which enables the president to dodge inconvenient encounters. Ernest Istook, a former Republican Congressman from Oklahoma and a distinguished fellow at The Heritage Foundation calls the president's absence ill-timed saying, "aside from the elections, he's making himself unavailable to prepare for the major issues in the lame duck session of Congress that starts November 15th."

The reaction from conservatives is predictable—this is no time to be gallivanting around the globe, bowing to heads of state and staying in ritzy resorts. But the real key is how moderate and conservative Democrats will take it.

For the most part, it’s the moderates who’s scalps will be taken on November 2. Having the leader of the party essentially abandon the Capital before the dust even settles has to be insult added to injury.

Wall Street Journal Report: Up to 23,000 retirees to lose healthcare coverage

The Wall Street Journal isn’t making many friends at Health and Human Services or the White House: in a week’s time, they’ve dropped two bombshells regarding the impacts of Obamacare.  Last week was the revelation that McDonald’s would likely drop its Mini-Med plans due to the new law’s cost ratio requirements.

This week, another shoe drops.  3M says it would be forced to stop offering health insurance plans to its retirees.

image The St. Paul, Minn., manufacturing conglomerate notified employees on Friday that it would change retiree benefits both for those who are too young to qualify for Medicare and for those who qualify for the Medicare program. Both groups will get an unspecified health reimbursement instead of having access to a company-sponsored health plan.

The maker of Post-it notes and Scotch tape said it made the announcement now to give retirees a chance to explore different options during this year's benefit-enrollment period, according to a 3M memo reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. A 3M spokeswoman, Jacqueline Berry, confirmed the contents of the memo.

"As you know, the recently enacted health care reform law has fundamentally changed the health care insurance market," the memo said. "Health care options in the marketplace have improved, and readily available individual insurance plans in the Medicare marketplace provide benefits more tailored to retirees' personal needs often at lower costs than what they pay for retiree medical coverage through 3M.

"In addition, health care reform has made it more difficult for employers like 3M to provide a plan that will remain competitive."

This is not 3M’s first major announcement regarding Obamacare.  In the days following the passage and signing of the law, dozens of publicly traded companies were forced by accounting and SEC rules to announce charges on quarterly earnings because of the tax implications the law imposed.

3M was forced to announce a $90 million charge against earnings because accounting rules require them to disclose information that could negatively affect earnings in the fiscal quarter they learn about them.  Remember—Obamacare was supposed to “bend the cost curve” down.  Instead, it has already cost US companies billions of dollars in earnings and there is certainly much more of that in store.

This week’s story demonstrates another falsehood used to foist this abomination on the American people:  “If you like your healthcare plan, you can keep it.”

No wonder Democrats are running as far away from Obama and Obamacare as they can get.

Conflicting reports on FBI investigation of former SEIU President Andy Stern

Are they, or are they not?  That is the question.

Reports are conflicting this morning regarding a possible criminal probe by the FBI and the Dept of Labor, over a corruption probe of Service Employees International Union, the powerful union once led by Obama buddy, Andy Stern.

Fox News:

WASHINGTON -- The FBI and the U.S. Labor Department are investigating prominent labor leader Andy Stern in their probe of corruption at the Service Employees International Union, according to two people who have been interviewed by federal agents.

The two organized labor officials met with federal agents this summer to answer questions about a six-figure book contract that Stern landed in 2006 and his role in approving money to pay the salary of an SEIU leader in California who allegedly performed no work.

But SEIU and company are denying any such probe exists:

An SEIU spokeswoman flatly denied an Associated Press and Los Angeles Times reports today that the union and its former president Andy Stern are subject to an FBI investigation.

Ringuette said she'd had "not a single report of a federal inquiry" from the union's staff. "Andy hasn't been contacted" by the FBI, she said.

…

"We have no idea what thees unnamed souces are talking about, but we have not been contacted by any federal agency on this matter," she said, blaming the story on the union's bitter California rivals.

"We did talk to [the FBI] a year ago, but we weren't the subject of investigation. We helped them unearth info about Stephens," Ringuette said.

What we know for sure is this:  SEIU has been the focus of a very high profile investigation regarding several financial scandals in the last two years.  In 2008, the LA Times meticulously described a scheme in which California SEIU boss Tyrone Freeman allegedly swiped a few hundred large from union coffers. The embarrassed union deep-sixed Freeman and demanded restitution.

In April of this year, Stern abrubtly left his post as President two years before the end of his term, claiming “personal life” matters were more pressing.

And what we can speculate on, is this from the Fox News report:

One person who spoke to federal agents twice, in May and June, said they asked about a 2006 contract in which Stern received a $175,000 advance from Simon & Schuster to write the book "A Country That Works." The SEIU and its locals bought thousands of copies of the book after it was published. The union also paid thousands to fact-check and promote the book, but Stern pocketed the advance.

Follow the bouncing money ball.  Stern writes a book and gets a sweet advance payment.  The book hits shelves and the union membership buys it up, does its own “fact-checking” and uses thousands in union funds to promote the book.  SEIU engages in a little self-adulation, Stern walks away with a six-figure sum.  Maybe it’s not corruption per se, but it sure doesn’t pass the smell test.

Redistributing wealth with the Gulf Coast Claims Facility

imagePresident Barack Hussein Obama famously said, “I do think at a certain point, you’ve made enough money.”  This man, this regime is hell bent on making sure the rich suffer the consequences of rapaciously accumulating all of that wealth.  So much so, that they are apparently attempting to redistribute it even with the Gulf Coast Claims Facility.  The GCCF is the apparatus that distributes the $20 billion slush fund that the regime arm-twisted out of BP.  The GCCF is administered by none other than the former “Pay Czar,” Kenneth Feinberg.  You know, the guy who said he’d be “uncompensated” for that position but got a six-figure salary, anyway.

In a story from yesterday’s Mobile Press-Register:

Business owners and public officials in Baldwin County say they are alarmed by reports of employees receiving more money for oil spill claims than owners of the businesses they work for.

It is just another aspect of their biggest problem with Ken Feinberg’s Gulf Coast Claims Facility — that business owners near Baldwin County’s once-lucrative beaches get checks that cover only a fraction of losses suffered after the oil spill began keeping tourists at bay.

David Wright is an extreme example. The owner of an Elberta company that builds high-end homes for people who plan to either retire or vacation on the coast, Wright had to lay off his 15 workers when his customers canceled contracts after the April 20 spill.

Rob Manney, a supervisor on Wright’s crew, said he got checks totaling 80 percent of his personal claim with Feinberg’s operation.

Wright’s business claim was denied.

“How do you pay an employee and not the business?” Wright asked. “It’s anti-business.”

Feinberg did not respond to requests for comment made to his media representative.

Feinberg says that the GCCF is not under the direction of BP or the regime.  That, obviously, is a bunch of shit. There is only one reason why Wright’s employees are getting claims checks and business owners like Wright are not—it’s class discrimination.  “Bourgeoisie” business owners like Wright are the people who create the jobs that drive this economy.  But to the Obama regime, men like Wright are guilty of building wealth on the sweat and blood of their employees.  So, when the opportunity arises to “make it right,” they do so.  They deny legitimate claims submitted by business owners while approving the claims of the businesses’ employees.

I am no fan of the $20 billion slush fund.  It’s just another way for the regime to pick winners and losers.  Or, in this case, to pick those who suffer a little and those who suffer a lot.

The regime’s complete ineptitude in responding to the disaster—as documented in the Deepwater Horizon Incident Timeline on this blog—shows that it is incapable of managing any significant enterprise or effort.  It inevitably allows politics to color its decision-making process, and shamefully allows ideology to pollute what should be a straightforward process of settling claims.

Road Trip Mission Accomplished. We now return to our regularly scheduled right wing extremism

Road Trip:  Mission Accomplished.

I’d hoped to land one engineering and consulting contract on this week’s road trip, and ended up with two.  Not only that, but I’ve also developed the inside track to getting several others after the calendar turns in January.  Unfortunately, I had to tell my marketing guy to pass on some other near-term opportunities that, in different times, we would have gone all-in on.  Business is good, but it could be a lot better.  The two contracts I signed this week will keep my division busy through the end of March, 2011 and the additional contracts would keep us busy through next year and beyond.  But we can’t expand and go after more work tomorrow than we’re doing today.

The climate is just too uncertain.  We did hire two new people over the summer—one was a replacement; the other was a new hire.  It was the first new professional hire in over a year at my firm.

We have the potential to go after a lot more work than we’re carrying now, but that would mean hiring more new people and we just can’t do that with any confidence right now.  The climate is just too uncertain.  The company president has some idea how his tax situation will be in January if Congress doesn’t act to extend the Bush-era tax cuts, but he won’t be sure until the extension is passed or defeated.  We also have a very uncertain picture regarding the entire company’s healthcare insurance plan.  We’ve gotten some scenarios from our insurance reps, and absolutely none of them are good.  Some are just less bad than others.

If I expand my division and add new employees, I’d have to be confident that my clients are expanding too, or that they are about to increase their demand for the engineering, consulting and planning services we provide.  If I had that confidence, I could deal with the uncertainty by knowing that we’ll remain viable and profitable despite the current regime’s attitude.  If I knew my customers were buying, I would, too.  But I just don’t get that vibe from them.  And believe me, I’m good at getting the right vibe from the client.  We didn’t get where we are by not being in tune with the people who pay us so handsomely.

On the drive home today, it occurred to me that it is getting increasingly more difficult to do business in America.  Dammit, the business of America IS BUSINESS.  We build things.  We make things.  We invent things and we sell things like no other civilization on the planet has ever done.

Why should we suffer idiots in Washington who are hell bent on making it more difficult to do business in this country?  Why should we suffer them in the State House?  City Hall?

Is it “extreme” to expect a candidate for election to make it easier to do business in this country?

Nevada “Smart Grid” Project is Dumb Economics

Via Doug Ross @ Journal yesterday, an audit of federal stimulus spending found that $111 million in Stimulus spending “saved or created” 55 jobs at the bargain basement cost of a mere $2,018,000 each.

Yesterday, I treated you to a project-by-project look at money spent vs. jobs created, and one of the biggest boondoggles was the so-called Nevada “Smart Grid” project.  Please try not to gag as you read how the regime touts its “accomplishment:”

84. Enabling Customers to Manage their Energy Use – Las Vegas, Nevada – $137.9 million

The Department of Energy awarded a Smart Grid Investment Grant to NV Energy for a comprehensive smart grid project that will integrate multiple smart grid technologies, including 1.3 million smart meters, dynamic pricing, customer communications and in‐home networks, grid monitoring, distribution automation, distributed renewables, and electric vehicles. This will help NV Energy manage its electric system more efficiently and enable customers to more actively manage their energy use.

Headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada, NV Energy serves 2.4 million Nevadans ‐‐ as well as a state tourist population of approximately 40 million annually. Additionally, the company serves more than 46,000 electric customers in the Lake Tahoe‐area of California. 15  Nevadans have been employed by this grant and NV Energy estimates that the project will  create 400‐500 temporary and 45 permanent jobs.

  • Did the project create 400 to 500 temporary jobs?  If it did, it cost between $278,000 and $347,500 each, and those jobs are now gone.
  • Did the project create 15 new hires?  Do we really want to do the math on that one?  Of course we do: $$9,266,666.67 each.
  • Did the project result in 45 long-term, permanent positions?  If so, it cost $3.09 million each.

I don’t care how you want to slice this one: It’s dumb economics.  The people who tout these kinds of boondoggles are either really bad at math, or they think you are really bad at math.

Democrats have to be called to account for this kind of wasteful spending.  It was money we didn’t have and money that will cost my children and grandchildren interest for decades to come.

White House Insider: 'The President Is Losing It” -- Democrats’ Nixon Administration

White House Insider: 'The President Is Losing It

Just.  Wow.

...I don’t know [how bad things are in the White House] about right now, because I have not been there in over a month. But I still hear things, and [it's] not good..

..I don’t have a problem saying that the president is losing it. I don’t mean he is like losing his mind. I mean to say that he is losing whatever spark he had during the campaign. When you take away the crowds, Obama gets noticeably smaller. He shrinks up inside of himself. He just doesn’t seem to have the confidence to do the job of President, and it’s getting worse and worse. Case in point – just a few days before I left, I saw first hand the President of the United States yelling at a member of his staff. He was yelling like a spoiled child. And then he pouted for several moments after. I wish I was kidding, or exaggerating, but I am not. The President of the United States threw a temper tantrum. The jobs reports are always setting him off, and he is getting increasingly conspiratorial over the unemployment numbers. I never heard it myself, but was told that Obama thinks the banking system is out to get him now. That they and the big industries are making him pay for trying to regulate them more. That is the frame of mind the President is in these days. And you know what? Maybe he is right, who knows?

Two questions:  Why is Cristina Romer talking so soon after leaving the White House, and does this indicate that Obama, like Richard M. Nixon did a generation ago, is turning into a mental basket case?

Hmm…

Dinesh D'Souza, Forbes and telling the truth about how Obama really thinks

President Barack Hussein Obama says one thing and does another.  He tells you what he’s for, and then he actively works against it.  He campaigned as a moderate consensus builder and attempts to govern as a radical divisionist.

Dinesh D’Souza, in an article for Forbes Magazine, tells the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about how this radical really thinks:

Theories abound to explain the President's goals and actions. Critics in the business community--including some Obama voters who now have buyer's remorse--tend to focus on two main themes. The first is that Obama is clueless about business. The second is that Obama is a socialist--not an out-and-out Marxist, but something of a European-style socialist, with a penchant for leveling and government redistribution.

These theories aren't wrong so much as they are inadequate. Even if they could account for Obama's domestic policy, they cannot explain his foreign policy. The real problem with Obama is worse--much worse. But we have been blinded to his real agenda because, across the political spectrum, we all seek to fit him into some version of American history. In the process, we ignore Obama's own history. Here is a man who spent his formative years--the first 17 years of his life--off the American mainland, in Hawaii, Indonesia and Pakistan, with multiple subsequent journeys to Africa.

A good way to discern what motivates Obama is to ask a simple question: What is his dream? Is it the American dream? Is it Martin Luther King's dream? Or something else?

It is certainly not the American dream as conceived by the founders. They believed the nation was a "new order for the ages." A half-century later Alexis de Tocqueville wrote of America as creating "a distinct species of mankind." This is known as American exceptionalism. But when asked at a 2009 press conference whether he believed in this ideal, Obama said no. America, he suggested, is no more unique or exceptional than Britain or Greece or any other country.

Perhaps, then, Obama shares Martin Luther King's dream of a color-blind society. The President has benefited from that dream; he campaigned as a nonracial candidate, and many Americans voted for him because he represents the color-blind ideal. Even so, King's dream is not Obama's: The President never champions the idea of color-blindness or race-neutrality. This inaction is not merely tactical; the race issue simply isn't what drives Obama.

What then is Obama's dream? We don't have to speculate because the President tells us himself in his autobiography, Dreams from My Father. According to Obama, his dream is his father's dream. Notice that his title is not Dreams of My Father but rather Dreams from My Father. Obama isn't writing about his father's dreams; he is writing about the dreams he received from his father.

D’Souza describes Obama as an anticolonialist, a breed of leftist that holds the European bourgeoisie responsible for accumulating wealth, power and status by exploiting and looting third world regions of the globe.  It’s not liberty, competition, good planning or innovative ideas that have made America great.  It’s not exceptionalism at all. Anticolonialists believe America’s greatness came because of exploitation of the rightful owners of all that wealth and that “at a certain point, you’ve made enough money.”

If political ideologies were diseases, socialism would be a bad head cold.  Marxism would be the flu.  And anticolonialist leftism would be Captain Trips.  Obama is a lethal threat to the continued success and long term survival of this Republic.  He sees it as evil, exploitative and in need of a lesson.  He thinks we still have much to apologize for; that our penance is not nearly complete.  We are an ungovernable, unruly mob of sinners, living under a Constitution that simply doesn’t allow the central government enough authority to limit our freedom or punish our alleged transgressions.

And 52% of you voted for him, and allowed him to become the “leader” of the “free world.”

Hope and change, indeed.

Questions I would ask President Obama at today’s White House presser

  1. Mr. President, what do you have to say to the half-million people who lost their jobs while you vacationed at Martha’s Vineyard?
  2. Mr. President, have you spoken with Imam Rauf about the controversy surrounding the Ground Zero mosque?
  3. Followup: Will you ask Imam Rauf to move the facility to a different location?
  4. Mr. President, Pastor Terry Jones has said he would cancel his planned Quran burning if he got a call from you.  Have you called him, yet?
  5. Mr. President, please explain why you think extending tax cuts for all Americans is a bad idea.
  6. Mr. President, if a couple owns a small business and makes more than $250,000, isn’t it true that they will see enough of a tax increase to start laying off employees?
  7. Mr. President, why have you added more to the national debt than any of your 43 predecessors?
  8. Mr. President, why did you neglect to even mention the Gulf Oil Spill in seven straight weekend radio addresses?
  9. Mr. President, how many jobs will be lost if you continue to enforce the deepwater drilling moratorium?
  10. Mr. President, exactly what did you know about the job offer to Mr. Sestak of Pennslyvania, and when did you know it?

Those are just the 10 off the top of my head, and I didn’t even get to the hidden economic daggers now being discovered in Obamacare and the financial regulation reform legislation.  Feel free to add more, if you wish.  The President’s first news conference since May 28 starts today at 11:00 EDT.

Did Obama really call for eliminating capital gains taxes?

Why, yes.  Yes, he did.  During his interview with Brian Williams of NBC News yesterday evening:

BRIAN WILLIAMS: Let's talk about another topic that's part of the firmament here and everywhere. And that's the economy. The New York Times said this weekend, "President Obama has another new plan on the economy. Now would be a good time to find out about it." Do you have anything new on the economy? And while you've been away, we had a horrible GDP number last month.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, look, we — we anticipated that the recovery was slowing. The economy is still growing, but it's not growing as fast as it needs to. I've got things right now in — before Congress that we should move immediately. And I've said so before I went on vacation, and I'll keep on saying when I — now that I'm back. We should be passing legislation that helps small businesses get credit, that eliminates capital gains taxes so that they have more incentive to invest right now.

I am no supporter of President Obama. Not politically, not ideologically, not philosophically.  But this is an idea I can get behind.  I only wonder how Democrats in Congress feel about the prospect of returning after the Labor Day recess and being asked to pass legislation that eliminates capital gains taxes.

One can only imagine the reaction from the “professional left.”  John Boehner should immediately submit the matter as privileged resolution.

Harry Reid’s head will explode.  Nancy Pelosi’s head will rotate 360 degrees.  Counter-clockwise.

President says: “I’m having a great time!” on vacation

Halo-pose Last night President Obama and First Lady Obama dined at State Road Restaurant in West Tisbury on Martha’s Vineyard.

Their dinner companions were family friends Dr. Eric and Cheryl Whitaker, senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, and lawyer and business executive Vernon Jordan and wife Ann Dibble Jordan.

As they departed the restaurant at 9:55 pm ET, reporters asked the president if he was enjoying his vacation even with the rain.

"I'm having a great time,” the president said.

How wonderful that Dear Leader is enjoying himself.

Meanwhile:

America needs a vacation.

Gimme some feedback in the comments.

Obama: Since Islam has always been a part of America, a mosque at Ground Zero is awesome, or something

Obama backs controversial New York mosque project

With the rhetoric growing more heated, Obama decided on Friday to make his voice heard.

Obama was speaking during an Iftar dinner he hosted at the White House. Iftar is the evening meal when Muslims break their daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

While the establishment and free expression clauses are absolutely iron clad, making such a statement—following his idiotic statement regarding Islam in America earlier this week—perfectly illustrates that the smartest man in the world is a complete moron.

Democrats from sea to shining sea must be asking themselves, “what else can go wrong?”
