What They’re Saying: Alabama Crimson Tide Dismantles Florida Gators

image Dennis Dodd, CBS Sports: This Alabama team … plays with more confidence than last year's. That team thought it could do it. This one knows it. Saban has kept the accomplished hungry by creating competition. The defense keeps driving because it can't possibly be as good as last season's unit. Except that it's headed that way.

Randy Kennedy, Mobile Press-Register: Win No. 19 in a row for Alabama did more than maintain the Crimson Tide's No. 1 ranking. It solidified Alabama as the country's best program. And it's not even close.

Mr. College Football with Tony Barnhardt: Alabama looked at the Florida threat and barely broke a sweat Saturday night. I still have people who are telling me that Alabama can’t go 12-0 for the third straight consecutive regular season? So I’ll ask you: Who is going to beat this team? Nobody in college football is playing with as much talent, power, coaching, and attitude as the Crimson Tide right now.

Dan Wetzel, Yahoo Sports: Saban has managed to convince his guys in two seemingly dissimilar concepts – that the Tide is great enough to dominate any team in America, yet not nearly good enough to assume they can beat anyone. It’s a combination of outrageous confidence and a deep fear of failure. When packaged together what you get is this – a team that is physical, fast and focused.

Chris Low, ESPN: We were pretty sure that Alabama was the class of the SEC going into Saturday night’s contest with Florida. Now, there’s no doubt after seeing the Crimson Tide manhandle the Gators 31-6 in a game that was never really close.

Jess Nicholas, Editor-in-Chief, Tidefans.com:  Alabama’s opponents are hoping the Crimson Tide’s defense truly is sleight-of-hand, and that somewhere there is a talisman that can translate Saban’s defensive schemes and show them the path to enlightenment. But unless something changes, the only path through either Alabama’s offense or its defense is the one that leads to the place described in Dante’s “Inferno”: Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

I’ll add this:  Right now, the only team that can beat Alabama is…  Well, Alabama.

One Nation Protester Assaults Reporter

Peaceful.

Tolerant.

Non-violent.

Please be warned that there is some strong language in this video.  Why this woman wasn’t arrested by the Park Police is a mystery.  People who behave like this in public are a major reason for the tension and divisiveness characterizing American politics over the last four years.  There has always been tension and strong emotions between opposite sides, but it has rarely gotten violent.

These are not nice people.  Nor are they the tolerant, peaceful and non-violent groups they claim to be.

I wonder how much of the trash left on the Mall came from that bag of hers?

The “Special Army Unit” Hoax: Feeling Stoopid yet?

image In April of this year, I wrote the following post.

It’s October.  There are no combat troops deploying anywhere in the US.  Nor will there be.

I have a question for those who originated this story and continued to defend and propagate the crap even after I completely destroyed the conspiracy theory:

 Are ya feeling stoopid yet?

UPDATED:  Please see the end of this post for additional confirmation.

Another conspiracy has gone viral on Twitter, this one regarding a "special army unit" to be deployed on American soil just before the November midterms.  The tweets link to a blog citing an unnamed source in the "military," and the blogger speculates on whether the unit would obey an order to open fire on US citizens.

The unit in question is the CBRNE Consequence Management Response Force (CBRNE stands for chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high-yield explosive incidents). It is a combat support unit originally comprised of about 4,700 soldiers (not the 80,000 troops cited on the web), and its capabilities include SAR, decontamination, medical/MEDEVAC, aviation, communications and logistics support.  At full strength in 2011, the unit could have as many as 20,000 troops, with three task forces:  Task Force Operations, Task Force Medical and Task Force Aviation.  While it's part of a combat unit and therefore receives some combat training, its mission is not warfighting--it's support. In a domestic deployment, its role would be to provide support for local and state first responders in the event of a natural disaster or terrorist attack.  The only combat-level training it receives is in self defense and non-lethal crowd control, which includes beanbag bullets, spike strip deployment and roadblock construction.

It is important to remember that the use of active duty military units in domestic police enforcement was severely restricted by passage of the Posse Comitatus Act in 1878.  The law expressly prohibits active duty Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine and federalized National Guard troops from acting in a law enforcement role, unless that role is expressly authorized by the Constitution or Congress.

News of the unit's stand-up on 1 October 2008 received considerable scrutiny from bloggers and media outlets, ranging from The Cato Institute to CNN.  The wiki link above includes a section on the "Sea Smurfs."

I love a good conspiracy theory as much as the next right wing nutcase, but this one is all about nothing.  For starters, this is a disaster response unit.  It's not a peace keeping force, and the Posse Comitatus restrictions are clear.  Second, even at full projected strength, the unit is one-fourth the size noted in the rumors.  Third, none of the three task forces have combat or traditional law enforcement roles.

Extra Point:  The unit has little (if any) lethal force capability, so even if a mob has to be subdued, it's going to be done so using beanbags and/or tear gas--the same tools police use to control angry mobs of anarchists and "peace activists" at leftwing demonstrations.

UPDATE (04/15/10):  Yesterday, I spoke with Lt. Commander Gary Ross, Public Affairs Officer for HQ Northcom, asking for clarification and correction of any known factual errors contained in the Examiner blog post.  LT CMDR Ross referred me to Don Manuszewski, Chief, Office of Public Affairs for US Army North, Ft. Sam Houston.

In a telephone interview with me this morning, Mr. Manuszewski confirmed the accuracy of my description of the unit's makeup organization and mission. Mr. Manuszewski stated that the Sea Smurf unit in question is not a combat unit, that it is not scheduled to deploy and that the original Army Times story that formed the genesis of this rumor was in error.    He then emailed me a link to a corrected Army Times story. The correction is found at the bottom of the page and (surprisingly) isn't mentioned by any of the blogs or media outlets propagating the rumor:

A non-lethal crowd control package fielded to 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, described in the original version of this story, is intended for use on deployments to the war zone, not in the U.S., as previously stated.

So, not only will the the troops that are deployed domestically not have lethal weaponry, they won't even have the non-lethal packages of bean bags, spike strips and roadblocks.
Mr. Manuszewski noted to me that the Sea Smurfs have been deployed domestically very recently--to Southeast Texas in response to 2008's Hurricane Ike, where they performed such threatening duties as logistics, operations management and medical support. While the Ike deployment date precedes the unit's formal stand-up date, they were deployed nonetheless.  Photos are herehere, and here.

"We have spent quite a bit of time trying to contact bloggers and media outlets to correct the inaccuracies," said Manuszewski.  "The Sea Smurfs are a well trained, well equipped hard working unit, as are all of our troops. We appreciate your help in correcting inaccuracies and stopping some of these rumors.  We know times are tough and people are worried, but they don't need to be scared of the Sea Smurfs."

I agree. Cased closed.

The idea that American troops would be deployed on US soil; that American commanders could conceivably give an order to open fire on US citizens; that National Guard troops would then begin shooting at their fellow Americans (including neighbors, friends, relatives, etc) is preposterous on its face.

My sources went on the record with me.  The idiots who propagated this garbage story repeatedly refused to identify their sources.  What does that tell you?

It suggests to me that the “Special Army Unit” story is either a whole-cloth fabrication or the figment of a sadly overactive imagination.

Tin foil hats for everyone.

One Nation Rally: Human litter trashes America and trashes the National Mall Update: Video of Park Service employee

This is disgusting.  The worst possible collection of intellectual rubbish peddlers gathered at the Lincoln Memorial yesterday—some say the crowd was tens of dozens strong—to trash American values,  American business and the American way of life.  They trashed capitalism.  They trashed conservativism.

They trashed America.  And, they’re Americans.

And after the angry throng climbed back on their union-provided buses and headed home, this is the mess they left:

Mall-Trash-01

Mall-Trash-02

Mall-Trash-03

On August 28, Glenn Beck sponsored a rally at the same location.  That event drew hundreds of thousands of people, and that well-behaved group picked up their trash and took it with them.

Here’s the difference between today’s conservative, constitutionally-driven Tea Party movement and the marxist-driven progressive movement.  One side loves America, and thinks enough about its national monuments to not leave the hallowed ground any worse than they found it.  The other side hates America and everything she stands for.  Their hatred of America is displayed in the way they trash the same spot that Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his “I have a Dream” speech.

They are truly Human Litter.  And it’s time to take out the trash.

Rick Sanchez fired at CNN: What the hell took so long?

The news broke last night—Rick Sanchez finally lost his CNN gig after calling Jon Steward a “bigot” and claiming that CNN was run by Jews.  Sanchez’ latest gaffetastic gaffe is the last of a very, very long list of WTF moments on the air.

  • Two important October economic releases could seal the fate of Democrats

image Two key releases of economic data are coming in the next few weeks, and they could turn a pending electoral disaster into a catastrophic tsunami for Democrats.  On Friday, October 8, the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the monthly payrolls and unemployment picture.  The consensus forecast is a net-zero gain (meaning private sector payroll gains will cancel out losses from Census temporaries) to a net-negative of around 10,000.  The unemployment rate is expected to rise slightly to 9.7% but a decrease in the participation rate (already at a morbidly low 64%) could put enough downward pressure for the rate to stay at 9.6%.  A decrease in the unemployment rate is highly unlikely—last month’s report had an unrounded estimate of 9.643%.  More likely is that the unrounded rate moves up by the few hundredths of a point needed to round to 9.7%.

On Friday October 29, the Bureau of Economic Analysis releases the preliminary estimate of Third Quarter GDP growth.  The consensus is for a number similar to the Q2 estimate of about 1.7% to about 2.0%.  A US economy growing less than a 2.5% annualized rate is too sluggish to create enough jobs to keep up with population growth and we head into the biggest quarter of the year for retail sales.

These are the last two major indicators of economic health to be released before the November 2, 2010 mid-term elections, and they can only hurt Democrats, not help them.  Having the numbers beat consensus estimates by a wide margin—meaning that economic forecasters badly blew their estimates—would be a too little, too late proposition for the party in power.  The clock has long been ticking on energizing a voting base, and the Republicans are way ahead on that scorecard.  Conversely, having the numbers come in significantly below consensus estimates—again meaning that economists badly blew their forecasts—would be a hammer blow.

But if the two indicators show up in line with consensus forecasts, it means voters go to the polls with the fresh taste of Democrat fail in their mouths.  The narrative from Monday, November 1 to Tuesday, November 2 will go something like this:

”With the latest economic figures showing the Democrats’ ambitious plan to rejuvenate a sagging economy has failed to gain real traction after two years in power, voters head to the polls on Tuesday in a referendum on President Barack Obama’s policies.

“Fresh polling shows Republicans are likely to win back the House of Representatives and make a serious run at taking the Senate, and this comes amid a backdrop of stubbornly high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, depressed housing prices and sagging retail sales.”

Bureau of Economic Analysis: Personal Income and Expenditures post weak gains

    Fresh from the BEA Website:

Personal income increased $59.3 billion, or 0.5 percent, and disposable personal income (DPI)increased $52.0 billion, or 0.5 percent, in August, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis.Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) increased $41.3 billion, or 0.4 percent. In July, personal income increased $22.0 billion, or 0.2 percent, DPI increased $5.7 billion, or less than 0.1 percent, and PCE increased $41.4 billion, or 0.4 percent, based on revised estimates.

Real disposable income increased 0.2 percent in August, in contrast to a decrease of 0.2percent in July. Real PCE increased 0.2 percent, the same increase as in July.

Although these figures came in slightly higher (or in line with) analyst expectations of around 0.4% and 0.3% for income and expenditures, the growth rate is still very tepid.

Calculated Risk, an economics blog, points out that the data shows expenditure growth in Q3 will probably be around 2.0% - barring a significant change in September, and that this suggests sluggish GDP growth in Q3.

It’s worth noting that consumer spending drives anywhere from two-thirds to three-fourths of US economic output as measured by GDP. A 1.5% to 2.0% rate of growth in real (after inflation) GDP is insufficient to produce enough jobs to keep pace with population growth.

So yes, Ms. Velma Hart.  This is the new reality.  At least for a while.

Whistling past the graveyard: House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn denies doomsday prediction

image You have to hand it to the Democrat leadership.  After dragging their caucus—kicking and screaming, in many cases—through one of the most contentious sessions of Congress in recent history, their unwillingness to publicly admit that an electoral disaster looms 30 days hence demonstrates remarkable Spin-Doctorsmanship and discipline.

House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn—the number  three man in the Democrat House Leadership—emerged from a meeting with President Barack Obama yesterday and defiantly dismissed predictions of a Tsunami  washing Democratics out of DC on November 2:

Clyburn said Obama and Democratic leaders of the House and Senate were upbeat at the White House session to discuss election prospects and craft a legislative agenda for the lame-duck session after the Nov. 2 elections.

"Everybody was upbeat," Clyburn told McClatchy. "The president was upbeat, we were upbeat, our members who left (Washington) last night were upbeat. As I travel the country, I don't hear all this gloom and doom out there that everybody's talking about."

After the White House meeting, Clyburn huddled with Democratic National Committee chairman Tim Kaine, a former Virginia governor, to discuss election prospects.

With most analysts predicting that Republicans will regain control of the House, Clyburn said Democratic control will hold — though with a narrower margin.

No one—not even Jim Clyburn really believes this nonsense. Reliably Democrat-leaning Political prognosticators like Charlie Cook are writing off the possibility of Clyburn, Pelosi and Hoyer keeping their House Leadership jobs in January.  This followed Stu Rothenberg’s equally dire prediction.  Meanwhile, University of Virginia’s Larry Sabato was sticking to his now month-old prediction of a 47-seat switch.

    What about the Senate?

Sabato points out that the House has switched parties six times since World War II, and in every one of those instances, the upper chamber flipped as well.  Most pundits and prognosticators expect that the Democrats will break that streak this time and that the GOP will fall a few seats short of ending Dingy Harry Reid’s rein as Majority Leader.

Thirty two days, baby.  Thirty two days, and we’ll see.
