Big East flanks C-USA's bid to snatch BCS AQ status, woos Memphis

Memphis expected to join Big East in 2013

Memphis is expected to join the Big East for the 2013-14 school year, a person with knowledge of the discussions told USA TODAY.
 
Both sides are agreed on the move that would take Memphis out of the Conference USA for all sports but final approval from the Big East presidents is still to come.
 
The addition of Memphis would be another piece in the overhaul of football schools in the Big East.

With West Virginia seeking to leave for the Big 12 and Syracuse and Pitt bolting for the ACC, the Big East was in serious danger of having Conference USA snatch its Bowl Championship automatic qualifying status.

But in a bold flanking maneuver, the Big East is poised to snatch C-USA's "bell cow" basketball program in the hopes that beating the daylights out of the Memphis Tiger football team will allow Louisville and Cincinnati the opportunity to pursue the automatic Orange Bowl berth.
