Alabama’s 2012 Class: That's a wrap (updated)

With only a little drama, the Alabama Crimson Tide put the final touches on what could be discussed as the best recruiting class in program history. The class is studded with four and five star standouts and for all intents and purposes, it was wrapped up weeks ago when five-star Safety Landon Collins announced his verbal commitment to the Tide on January 5.

Collins was the last addition to the official signee list during a ceremony held at his high school in Dutchtown, Louisiana.

Confirmed signees shown in bold crimson.  Those signing elsewhere are shown in bold grey italics.

Signing day surprises: DT Korren Kirven and DT Dalvin Tomlinson. Two four star defensive lineman with big upside.

Alabama lost two verbal commitments in WR Casey Gladney, who signed with Texas Tech; and RB Justin Taylor, who signed with Kentucky after initially accepting a grey shirt offer at Alabama when Nick Saban informed him that there wouldn't be room in the class for him.

In a bit of signing day drama, DE Darius Philon of Vigor High in Prichard didn't sign. Reports are that sometime last week, he was also informed that there wouldn't be room in the class for him. However, during ceremonies at the school, he committed to Alabama anyway. Per the new SEC signing rule, Alabama is unable to accept his letter of intent. There's reliable speculation that he will eventually sign with Arkansas or Auburn, the school he was originally committed to. Expect some blowback from the media on this one, folks.

UPDATE: It looks like Philon will sign with Arkansas, per Tim Watts of BamaOnline.com

What about tracking the Walk-Ons and Preferred/Invited Walk-Ons. I, for one find these kids very interesting and love to watch them throughout the season. Would be really nice to see how many are in the beginnings of camp, who makes it thru to the season and who comes out for spring, get some background on their stories, etc.
