Morning Six Pack: October 7, 2012

Right, Auburn? Here’s six of the coldest, clearest and crispest college football stories from around the country.

Down go the fighting Jimbos

Florida State brought its No. 3 ranking to NC State looking for its first ACC road win of the season. It didn't happen. The Wolfpack scored a TD with 16 ticks left to stun the 'Noles 17-16.

Seat getting warm for Auburn Chizik

No matter what Pat Dye says on radio shows or during speaking engagements, Auburn head coach Gene Chizik just sat square down on the hot seat.

Muschamp's Gators anything but soft in bulldozing of No. 4 LSU

Will Muschamp called his Gators soft in 2011. They took it to heart. Florida pounds LSU with the running game and an unrelenting defense.

Movin’ on Up. To the East Side…

Cierre Wood and George Atkinson III gave Notre Dame its first 100-yard rushing duo in a decade, and Everett Golson came off the bench to lead the No. 9 Irish to a 41-3 victory over Miami on Saturday night.

Who was that masked man?

Unlikely star emerges for West Virginia, outshining Heisman favorite Geno Smith.

Quotable:

“That was fun,” Muschamp said, a smile creeping across his face.

An old defensive player, Muschamp is coaching in a place where Spurrier’s Fun ‘N’ Gun dazzled and Meyer’s spread amazed. In a complete departure from the program’s DNA, Florida threw for all of 61 yards Saturday. The school has stats going back to 1996 and that’s the lowest single-game passing output in that time, but it’s an absolute certainty that no Spurrier team threw for that little – and he took over in 1990.

But in today’s SEC, you must be able to win physical battles with the likes of Alabama and LSU if you want to win the league. Florida showed its progress by taking care of the Tigers on Saturday, and Will Muschamp showed signs that he’s the right guy to succeed his champion predecessors.
