Syracuse sophomore Fab Melo will not play in the NCAA tournament due to an eligibility issue, the school announced Tuesday afternoon.
Melo did not travel with the team to Pittsburgh.Syracuse also said due to University policy and federal student privacy laws, no further details can be provided at this time.

This story raises serious questions about how much Syracuse knew before it was named a No. 1 seed in the East Regional of the tournament. If school officials knew Melo was ineligible before Selection Sunday, a  scandal could be brewing.

We might also hear some noise among some of the No. 2 seeds--including Missouri and Ohio State over whether the NCAA Selection Committee seeded the tournament properly. The Selection Committee's mantra is that teams are selected and the tournament is seeded based on a program's body of work over the regular season. So it's unlikely that the Orange would have been relegated to a No. 2 (or lower) had the committee known of Melo's eligibility problems.
