M.I.A. and Madonna: The bird and the wardrobe malfunction

image Although the camera operators and producers tried to snuff the shot, Madonna’s guest singer M.I.A. still succeeded in flipping off America and telling the audience that she “doesn’t give a ____.”

The NFL and NBC quickly apologized for the moment.

"The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing and we apologize to our fans," said the NFL’s Brian McCarthy.”

"The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show," said NBC spokesman Christopher McCloskey. "Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers."

While the Material Girl promised Bob Costas that there would be no Janet Jackson-style wardrobe malfunction, there actually was one, but  you had to watch carefully to catch it.

Unlike Jackson’s clearly planned and choreographed exposure in 2004, Madonna’s oops may likely have been an unplanned mistake.

Look at the two photos below. On the left, Madonna is shown wearing a belt with fauld-like extensions. During one of the number’s moves, one of the dancers crosses in front of her and appears to snag the extensions, causing them to detach from the belt.

Madonna looks down (appearing surprised) and the dancers quickly obscure her long enough for her to remove the gear.

She finishes the number as shown on the right.

Was it an accident, or was the prop supposed to come off so she could continue the set without the encumbering extensions?

We report, you decide.
