A fitting tribute to Darrell Royal

Darrell Royal—the legendary coach of Texas Longhorn lore—passed away this week at the age of 88. I met Coach Royal several years ago at a charity event in Texas and I can say that I’ve never met a warmer, more engaging or more intelligent man.

Royal is credited with bringing the Wishbone offense to major college football. After disappointing seasons in 1969 and 1970, Alabama’s legendary Paul Bryant went to Texas to meet with and learn the offense from his old friend.

Between the two men, this offense led to five national championships. Royal won two and Bryant won three.

Here’s the video.
