South Alabama assistant football coach Kurt Crain was found dead by Spanish Fort police at his home Tuesday, apparently killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Baldwin County coroner Stan Vinson.

"It appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound," Vinson told the Press-Register when asked about the cause of death. Vinson said the investigation into Crain's death is continuing and an autopsy will likely be performed Wednesday.

Crain, 47, joined the staff of USA's fledgling football program in 2008 and coached inside linebackers for three seasons. He was an All-American linebacker at Auburn in 1987.
Autopsy planned today.

Our prayers and sincere condolences are with the Crain family today as they deal with this tragic loss.
