Stability goal for C-USA deal
Conference USA and Mountain West Conference officials hope a merger deal struck over the weekend will lead to a more lucrative television contract and more stability.
"It's going to enhance our presence from that perspective," Jeff Hammond, the Southern Miss interim athletic director, said of the TV angle. "That's going to be a big benefit to it."
And while the new conference, which will begin play in 2013, could bring more money to member schools like USM, the main motivation behind the move was to create a league that can survive defections in a chaotic college football landscape.
"It is exciting to watch these universities work together to build a more stable future," C-USA commissioner Britton Banowsky said in a news release. "They seem to share the same fundamental ideas about the value of athletics to higher education. It is apparent that this association has great potential and there are leaders within the group that are committed to maximizing it."
